Using the concepts discovered on pages 98 & 99 in our book, what similarities can we see with that of the article?
In the article, it talks about a private University in North Korea that is offering classes teaching about elements of the "outside world" such as science and world peace. This is a big deal because they are separated from everything outside of their country, most of which being restrictions from the internet, cell phones, etc. In our textbooks they talk about foreign trade effecting economic growth, this actually connects to the situation in North Korea very well. When foreign trade expanded it meant more jobs to most people, but others saw it as a way to expand our American values and ways of life to others. America's sense of morality was starting to become much clearer and religious missionaries and evangelists saw this as an opportunity to show others what we're all about. This is exactly what evangelical Christians and scientists are planning on doing with North Koreans.

Many see this rise in foreign trade and economy as a way to share America's values and way of life. We are doing this without any force involved which is what our book talked about. Being able to share our values and beliefs without being forcefull about it is the best tactic we can use, not onlt for our benefit but for the benefits of others also.

North Korea is generally a very private, closed of place so there was some skeptism about the course. Similar to what was addressed in our book economic growth and froign trade also play a big role here. Many people see this as a way to spread the American values and ways of life. Another concept is religion because the missionaries and the evangelists see this as an oppurtunity to teach the North Koreans about God and our beliefs.
ReplyDeleteNorth Korea is a country that greatly seperated from the outside world, due to their leader, restrictions have been placed on the people of this country secluding them furthermore. However, a private university in North Korea has now offered classes in world peace and science, this is a big change. This links to many things discussed in our text books, the first being the expansion of foreign trade, with that comes the expansion of our morals and the ability to show others our way of life. Along with this sense of morality comes religion, evangelists are also able to help in this process teaching them again about our beliefs.
ReplyDeleteThe article seems to present many of the ideas that we saw in class from the two pages. The thought of a private university (This one called Pyongyang University of Science and Technology) in North Korea seemed to be a revolutionary idea but the government has used it as a way try to “civilize” the people in North Korea to give them the tools to be future leaders develop the country’s economy. They are also doing this by bringing in western teachers and getting its students accustomed to the western ideas. Through this University, the North Korean government is also looking to spread its political influence through this university so that the leaders can stay in power. The University is also backed by evangelical Christians who are looking to spread their Christian love among those in the university
ReplyDeleteThis article is about a once impossible thought that North Korea, one of the most secluded and controlled countries in the world, would allow a private university in their country. This private institution is called Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, and it is even teaching its students some western principles. Similarities between our book and this article can be found in the expansion of western influence. Our influence has reached a place where no one thought it would be seen for a very long time. This University also has the support of evangelical Christians who will attempt to educate the North Koreans about the Christian God and morality. In this, we can see a link to missionaries.
ReplyDeleteThis article talks about a private university in North Korea that focuses on world peace and science. The university offers classes about foreign countries and the “outside world”, which is good because North Korea is very secluded from the rest of the world. Similarities to our text include economic change and foreign trade. The government of North Korea strives to spread its influence through the school to keep future leaders in the same path as the current ones. Evangelical Christians support this school, saying that they want to spread their beliefs about God and love.
ReplyDeleteThis article talks about a thing that not so long ago seemed impossible; a private university in North Korea. In the opening sentence the article addresses how North Korea has been so tightly sealed off that foreign news and even the Internet aren't present in the country. This school is a huge deal, to let science and a concept like world peace be studied there. Our textbook mentions the spread of economic change and foreign trade for the countries affected. American schools are thrilled at the idea of possibly working together with the North Korean school on ideas such as medicine, even when political relations are difficult. Christians are thrilled by this school, hoping values like morality are being taught, as well as the love of God.
ReplyDeleteThis article is about a private university that recently opened in North Korea. It is noteworthy because it is offering classes in science and world peace, and will eventually even grant students access to the internet. This is significant because North Korea is very oppressive and shuts its people off from the outside world. While the students are the very elite and still have to espouse the government’s political philosophy, it is still a very unique opportunity. The scientific community is hoping to collaborate with the school on projects and build a relationship with them. This article also talks about possible economic changes and foreign trade which relates to the concepts discussed in out text book.
ReplyDeleteThis article centers around the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology that was recently established in North Korea. Taking into account N. Korea's historically strict stance on religion and cyber freedom, this university is a huge step forward for the secluded country. The concepts addressed in our book, westernezation and the expansion of foreign trade, directly corrolate with the establishment of the university. Currently dealing with a poor economy and strained relations with other countries, the university is seeking to educate citizens who will hopefully someday bolster the economy and invigorate the country. Christians are also eager to evangelize in the university because it is the first chance they have to proselytize in the country.
ReplyDeleteThe article is about the University established by missionaries in North Korea. North Korea has always been known as a very strict and secluded country. This school is helping educate the people of the outside world. Similarly, the textbook also talks about expansion in trade. By North Korea beginning to expand by reaching out they hopefully will be able to boost there economy.
ReplyDeleteThe article talks about the The Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, in communist North Korea. Which is tightly sealed off from the outside world. It is offering certain students a chance to learn about the outside world. It is offering this through its first international conference for “the advancement of science education and international cooperation." Americans took interest in this class as a way to share "Christian love" as well as beliefs. This is similar to the book, in that, we wanted to utilize trade routes in order to spread beliefs and civilize other cultures.
